Laser the size of a virus particle: Miniature laser operates at room temperature and defies the diffraction limit of light

ScienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2012) ? A Northwestern University research team has found a way to manufacture single laser devices that are the size of a virus particle and that operate at room temperature. These plasmonic nanolasers could be readily integrated into silicon-based photonic devices, all-optical circuits and nanoscale biosensors.

Reducing the size of photonic and electronic elements is critical for ultra-fast data processing and ultra-dense information storage. The miniaturization of a key, workhorse instrument -- the laser -- is no exception.

The results are published in the journal Nano Letters.

"Coherent light sources at the nanometer scale are important not only for exploring phenomena in small dimensions but also for realizing optical devices with sizes that can beat the diffraction limit of light," said Teri Odom, a nanotechnology expert who led the research.

Odom is the Board of Lady Managers of the Columbian Exposition Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and a professor of materials science and engineering in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

"The reason we can fabricate nano-lasers with sizes smaller than that allowed by diffraction is because we made the lasing cavity out of metal nanoparticle dimers -- structures with a 3-D 'bowtie' shape," Odom said.

These metal nanostructures support localized surface plasmons -- collective oscillations of electrons -- that have no fundamental size limits when it comes to confining light.

The use of the bowtie geometry has two significant benefits over previous work on plasmon lasers: (1) the bowtie structure provides a well-defined, electromagnetic hot spot in a nano-sized volume because of an antenna effect, and (2) the individual structure has only minimal metal "losses" because of its discrete geometry.

"Surprisingly, we also found that when arranged in an array, the 3-D bowtie resonators could emit light at specific angles according to the lattice parameters," Odom said.

Report on Activity in the UK Service Sector ? Latest News | Business ...

According to recent reports on the BBC Business News website, activity in the UK service sector is at its slowest pace in over two years.

It reinforces the fact that the underlying economic conditions remain tough.

Official figures indicate that the UK economy grew by one per cent in the period between July and September 2012. However, this early indicator that the recession was lifting was marked by latest UK services PMI data that gives a clear signal that the road to full economic recovery may yet be a lengthy one.

The manufacturing sector shrank in October according to the PMI survey figures. In the construction industry, while output was improving, new work and employment had shrunk.

The PMI reading gave rise to discussion on whether the Bank of England may now increase quantitive easing. Under this process, the Bank buys government bonds in a bid to create benefits for the economy.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) suggested in their report that the UK would be the fastest growing major economy in Europe over the course of the following two years. They indicated that the Eurozone would register growth of 0.4% in comparison to the UK?s 1.4%.

It remains to be seen how this economic recovery will unfold, but it appears it may take longer than initially predicted.

eRepublik Labs CEO Alexis Bonte discusses gaming trends, Alien ...

At the recent Dublin Web Summit, we caught up with eRepublik Labs co-founder and CEO Alexis Bonte, who knows his way around the gaming industry rather well.

Started in 2007, eRepublik Labs ?creates game worlds? and is mostly known for social strategy game eRepublik.com. The game has seen roughly 3.5 million players to date, and is currently welcoming about 250,000 monthly active unique users.

Even though the venture capital-backed company has been around for a few years and is self-reportedly running a profitable business, Bonte explains that he still considers it a startup (which employs about 50 people in its offices in Madrid and Bucharest).

The company recently announced its acquisition of Spanish mobile apps and games maker Alien Flow to move into the tablet gaming space.

We have a chat with Alexis about the purchase and how it fits into its overall strategy, and discuss general gaming industry trends, with a particular focus on Europe.

For one, Alexis thinks people are getting tired of milking cows.

Turkey tries Israeli military over Gaza ship killings - Costa Rica News

ANKARA |
Mon Nov 5, 2012 1:08pm EST

ANKARA (Reuters) ? Turkey puts four former Israeli military commanders, including the head of the army, on trial in absentia this week for the 2010 killing of nine Turks on a Gaza-bound aid ship.

The trial, which begins in Istanbul on Tuesday, will further test relations between the one-time strategic allies and has been dismissed by Israel as a ?show trial? and ?political theatre?.

Relations between the Jewish state and what was once its only Muslim ally, crumbled after Israeli marines stormed the Mavi Marmara aid ship in May 2010 to enforce a naval blockade of the Palestinian-run Gaza Strip and killed nine Turks in clashes with activists on board.

The rift has continued despite U.S. efforts to encourage a rapprochement between the two regional powers whose cooperation it needs to address changes sweeping the Middle East.

Israel and NATO member Turkey, which both border Syria, once shared intelligence information and conducted joint military exercises, cooperation which has since been cancelled.

A Turkish state prosecutor is seek multiple life sentences for the now retired Israeli officers over their involvement in the nine killings and the wounding of more than 50 others.

The indictment names Israel?s former Chief of General Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, former Navy Commander Eliezer Marom, former Air Force Commander Amos Yadlin and former head of Air Force intelligence Avishay Levi, seeking prison sentences of more than 18,000 years for each of them.

Among the charges listed in the 144-page indictment are ?inciting murder through cruelty or torture? and ?inciting injury with firearms?.

A total of 490 people aboard the ship during the raid, including activists and journalists, are expected to give evidence. Normally barred from courtrooms, the trial will be officially recorded by television cameras, although proceedings are not expected to be broadcast.

?The ?Blue Marmara Trial? due to commence on November 6th in Istanbul, clearly falls under the category of a Show Trial; an act which has nothing to do with either law or justice,? Israel?s foreign ministry said in a statement.

?This ?Trial? does not qualify under any facet or foundation of a lawful judicial system, and is merely a propaganda display. It would be in Turkey?s interest to deal with this issue through bilateral dialogue,? it said.

A Turkish foreign ministry official declined comment, saying the incident was now a matter for the judiciary.

REGRET

Ties between the two states began to unravel even before the Mavi Marmara raid after Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan stormed off a stage he was sharing with Shimon Peres at a World Economic Forum in 2009, saying the Israeli President knew ?how to kill?, a reference to the December 2008-January 2009 Gaza offensive.

But relations hit a new low when Turkey expelled Israel?s ambassador and froze military cooperation after a U.N. report into the Mavi Marmara incident released in September last year largely exonerated the Jewish state.

That report was meant to encourage a rapprochement between the two countries but ultimately deepened the rift when it concluded Israel had used unreasonable force but that the blockade on Gaza was legal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in July Israel and Turkey needed to repair their relationship, but attempts to rekindle the strategic relationship have failed.

Turkey has demanded a formal apology, compensation for victims and the families of the dead and for the Gaza blockade to be lifted.

Israel has voiced ?regret?, short of the full apology demanded, and has offered to pay into what it called a ?humanitarian fund? through which casualties and relatives could be compensated.

IHH, the Turkish Islamic humanitarian agency which owns the Mavi Marmara, has said it expects the Turkish court to issue arrest warrants for the retired officers who would be obliged to be extradited to Turkey, a claim dismissed by Israel.

(AP) ? China's ruling Communist elite have endorsed the expulsion of former high-flying politician Bo Xilai and approved final preparations for the party's upcoming congress.

The closed-door meeting of the Central Committee that ended Sunday was the last before Communist Party leader Hu Jintao and others in his government begin to cede power to Vice President Xi Jinping and others at the congress, which opens Thursday.

The Central Committee said in a statement carried by the official Xinhua News Agency that it endorsed decisions to expel Bo and former Railways Minister Liu Zhijun from the Communist Party. Bo is accused of a range of misdeeds including covering up his wife's murder of a British businessman. Liu faces corruption charges.

Xinhua said Hu presided over the meeting and delivered a work report. It said Xi introduced a report of the current five-year session and an amendment to the party charter, both of which will be discussed at the congress. It gave no details.

The leadership transition takes place as slowing economic growth is exacerbating public ill feelings over corruption, social injustice and policies that favor state-run companies and the elite over private enterprise and ordinary Chinese. Abroad, China's attempts to build good relations with neighbors have been set back by territorial spats with Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam, and Beijing feels hemmed in by a U.S. push to divert more military resources to Asia.

The Central Committee applauded its performance over the past five years. "Faced with a complicated international environment and an arduous task of stable reform and development, the entire party under General Secretary Hu Jintao ... withstood the test of all types of difficulties and risks."

It said the economy had grown stably and rapidly, there had been major progress on reform and opening-up, and people's living conditions had improved remarkably.

The central committee did not signal any shifts in policies regarding the economy, but said it would continue to shift the growth model to one more driven by domestic demand.

The policy-setting committee also promoted two generals to the party commission that oversees the military: air force Gen. Xu Qiliang and Gen. Fan Changlong, a career soldier who runs the Jinan Military Area Command and took part in relief efforts after the Sichuan earthquake in 2008.

The Central Committee is comprised of about 370 people from the upper ranks of the party, government and military.

Bo's ouster earlier this year widened rifts within a leadership that likes to project an image of unity. It also complicated the bargaining over the roster of new leaders.

Virtual Vegan Potluck Post-Game (now including a Contest ...

PeptoIt?s one of those things?you hate to see it end, but there is also a huge feeling of relief. ?Sigh.

The VVP November 2012 is now a part of vegan history. ?Yet it will live forever (or perhaps not something quite so permanent) thanks to the (ahem) links you?ve all updated to point directly to the relevant blog posts. ?(You did that, right?) ?All one now has to do is visit Vegan Bloggers Unite! or the VVP webpage to revisit the Potluck over and over and over? We can all daydream about the wonderful appetizers, drinks, soups, salads, breads, main courses and desserts that we will be making. ?Just in time for the holidays

We had a few glitches and I?ll not whine about it, though part of me really, really wants to whine. ?Somer and Lidia did a tremendous job helping me herd a few cats for most of November 1. ?And that?s all I?m going to say about that.

So?Thank you first and foremost to all of the wonderful bloggers ? old friends and new ? who make the Potluck what it is. ?Once again, I am awed by your enthusiasm and creativity. ?Big hugs to my cohorts, Jason, Somer and Lidia who spread the word and gave me much-needed love and support at the exact needed moments. ?Like when I published my post 12 hours early. ?Finally, gratitude to our sponsors who for some unknown reason, agreed to help by Tweeting, blogging and posting about an event that takes place in the ether by people they?ve never met and where no actual food is shared. I hope they will stick with us through many Potlucks to come. ?Everyone: give yourselves a big pat on the back.

What?s next? ?For starters, we are holding a contest to pick the favorite recipe from each category ? and you all are the judges. ?All you have to do is email me your pick from each course ? remember just one recipe per course. ?It?s going to be a really difficult decision because everyone did a great job at sharing truly good recipes. ?I?ll tally the results and the winner from each category will get a Virtual Vegan Potluck t-shirt (now in the design and production phase?). ?The winning recipes will be posted on the VVP website ? with permission from the authors, of course. ?Rules of the contest are:

1) please vote only once ? choosing one selection from each course;
2) if you participated in the Potluck, please do not vote for your own recipe;
3) VVP participants, blog readers and total strangers welcome to vote;
4) please do not vote for An Unrefined Vegan?s amazing recipe?no matter how much you want to ? I happen to know the person giving out the t-shirts. ?I will, however, cast my votes for your recipes;
5) voting closes at midnight (U.S. Mountain Time) on November 12; winner announced November 13.

Did I say VVP t-shirt?? ?You read that right. ?I?ve got my immense and talented staff of artists, designers and printers working overtime on a fabulous, cruelty-free and plant-based tee. ?I?ll be making those available on the website soonish.

But wait! ?There?s more!? We?ve rolled out a blog on the VVP website ?- the first post is already up ? which will include our sparkling and witty commentary about the mundane and trivial along with guest bloggers, giveaways and recipes. ?You?ll want to follow the blog, because soon we are going to be giving away a gift certificate from our sponsor, forAnima. ?They?ve?generously donated $50 so one lucky person can shop their heart out for cruelty-free goodies. ?More on that and other giveaways in the weeks to come. ?P.S. Please welcome forAnima as well as Global Looking Glass ? our newest sponsor ? to the VVP team.

And finally?I?m already scheming about VVP III?(a.k.a. Grandson of VVP) which will most likely take place in the Spring of 2013. ?Who?s coming?
