Meet Roy Mallady, a 68 year-old retiree who has owned everything from Porsches and Ferraris to a 700 horsepower Nissan GT-R. Mallady describes himself as a "wannabe race car driver," and despite having dabbled in a broad array of high-end marques, Lexus is the nearest and dearest to this native Georgian's heart. He and his wife have owned no fewer than nine LSs, four LXs, and an SC400-- which tidily explains his extreme attraction towards the LFA ?ber flagship.
?
But Mallady didn't stop with his purchase of a single $375,000 LFA. His garage houses bookends of the full spectrum which was made available to U.S. buyers-- the first stateside example,?LFA #003,?and his just-purchased LFA #499, which directly precedes the final specimen that's destined for a museum.
?
Whence the obsession with the Japanese flagship? "It's the greatest car I've ever owned," he told a group assembled at an event organized by Toyota, according to Autoweek's Blake Z. Rong. "It'll be with me for the rest of my life... It's a piece of art."
?
Say what you may about the LFA's ranking in the pantheon on supercars, its birth and development in the midst a pre-recessionary,?sky's-the-limit climate was legendarily frought with turmoil. During those heady days of wanton R&D, the astronomically pricey switch from an aluminum chassis to a carbon fiber monocoque was simply considered part and parcel of those high dollar games, which ultimately speaks to Lexus' fiercely Japanese attempt to engineer their way into ultraluxury relevance.
?
Now that the LFA is officially history, the question remains whether the next halo car we see from Lexus will be as ambitious, or if the bean counters will take the upper hand and defeat the dreamers by forging an ultimately forgettable appliance.
?
Either way, we think Mr. Mallady has already done quite well with his .4 percent stake in the LFA empire.
