Evidence of life on Mars could come from Martian moon Phobos

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? A mission to a Martian moon could return with alien life, according to experts at Purdue University, but don't expect the invasion scenario presented by summer blockbusters like "Men in Black 3" or "Prometheus."

"We are talking little green microbes, not little green men," said Jay Melosh, a distinguished professor of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences and physics and aerospace engineering at Purdue. "A sample from the moon Phobos, which is much easier to reach than the Red Planet itself, would almost surely contain Martian material blasted off from large asteroid impacts. If life on Mars exists or existed within the last 10 million years, a mission to Phobos could yield our first evidence of life beyond Earth."

Melosh led a team chosen by NASA's Planetary Protection Office to evaluate if a sample from Phobos could contain enough recent material from Mars to include viable Martian organisms. The study was commissioned to prepare for the failed 2011 Russian Phobos-Grunt mission, but there is continued international interest in a Phobos mission, he said. It will likely be a recurring topic as NASA reformulates its Mars Exploration Program.

A Phobos mission was discussed at NASA's Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration workshop and a report issued June 26 stated that the Martian moons are "important destinations that may provide much of the value of human surface exploration at reduced cost and risk."

Melosh collaborated with Kathleen Howell, the Hsu Lo Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, and graduate students Loic Chappaz and Mar Vaquero on the project.

The researchers combined their expertise in impact cratering and orbital mechanics to determine how much material was displaced by particular asteroid impacts and whether individual particles would land on Phobos, the closer of the two Martian moons.

The team concluded that a 200-gram sample scooped from the surface of Phobos could contain, on average, about one-tenth of a milligram of Mars surface material launched in the past 10 million years and 50 billion individual particles from Mars. The same sample could contain as much as 50 milligrams of Mars surface material from the past 3.5 billion years.

"The time frames are important because it is thought that after 10 million years of exposure to the high levels of radiation on Phobos, any biologically active material would be destroyed," Howell said. "Of course older Martian material would still be rich with information, but there would be much less concern about bringing a viable organism back to Earth and necessary quarantine measures."

When an asteroid hits the surface of a planet it ejects a cone-shaped spray of surface material, similar to the splash created when someone does a cannonball into a swimming pool. These massive impacts pulverize the surface material and scatter high-speed fragments. The team calculated that the bulk of the fragments from such a blast on Mars would be particles about one-thousandth of a millimeter in diameter, or 100 times smaller than a grain of sand, but similar in size to terrestrial bacteria.

The team followed the possible paths the tiny particles could take as they were hurtled from the planet's surface through space, examining possible speeds, angles of departure and orbital forces. The team plotted more than 10 million trajectories and evaluated which would intercept Phobos and where they might land on the moon during its eight-hour orbit around Mars.

The probability of a particle landing on Phobos depends primarily on the power of the blast that launched it from the surface, Chappaz said.

"It is estimated that during the past 10 million years there have been at least four large impact events powerful enough to launch material into space, and we focused on several large craters as possible points of origin," he said. "It turns out that no matter where Phobos is in its orbit, it would have captured material from these powerful impact events."

After the team submitted its report, scientists identified a large, nearly 60-kilometers-in-diameter crater on Mars. The crater, named Mojave, is estimated to be less than 5 million years old, and its existence suggests that there would be an even greater amount of Martian material on Phobos that could contain viable organisms than estimated, Melosh said.

"It is not outside the realm of possibility that a sample could contain a dormant organism that might wake up when exposed to more favorable conditions on Earth," he said. "I participated in a study that found that living microbes can survive launch from impacts on rock, and other studies have shown some microscopic organisms can tolerate a lot of cosmic radiation."

This possibility has been a consideration for some time, and Michael Crichton's "The Andromeda Strain" brought it to public consciousness in 1969. However the movie scenario of a fatal contamination is unlikely, Melosh said.

"Approximately one ton of Martian material lands on Earth every year, " he said. "There is a lot more swapping back and forth of material within our solar system than people realize. In fact, we may owe our existence to life on Mars."

Howell also is optimistic that life is not unique to Earth.

"It's difficult to believe there hasn't been life somewhere out there in the vast expanse of space," Howell said. "The question is if the timeline overlaps with ours enough for us to recognize it. Even if we found no evidence of life in a sample from Phobos, it would not be a definitive answer to the question of whether or not there was life on Mars. There still may have been life that existed too long ago for us to detect it."

Melosh recently presented the team's findings at a joint NASA and European Space Agency meeting in Austria, and Chappaz will present the data at a meeting on July 14 in Mysore, India.

Sports Blog: My Wimbledon Winners

- Posted // 2012-06-28 - It seems like every year the winner of Wimbledon men's is one of three people: Roger Federer, Raphael Nadal or Novak Djokovic. In fact, these men have combined to win 27 of the last 28 Grand Slam titles and I am sick of it. These dudes can play and are certainly exciting to watch, as they have highlighted the tennis scene for the last eight years, but I think it is time for somebody else to win. Looking at this year?s Wimbledon field, here are some of the guys who I will be pulling for. You might as well hop on the bandwagon now.

Jimmy Wang (above) ? All right, so my man has a funny name, but that is not why I am rooting for him. Young Jimmy?s real name is Wang Yeu-tzoo and how much cooler could a name get? He is straight out of Taiwan, stands 5?10? and is hailed as the ?Next Great Hope for Asia?. His signature style is rocking an all-white hat backwards, which clearly means the man has swag. Plus, if his tennis playing is anything like that of his stellar countrymen of the ping pong world, how could you not root for him?

Dudi Sela ? First of all, Sela?s nickname is the ?Hebrew Hammer,? which is sure to strike fear into his opponent?s hearts. Sela hails from Israel and is the son of a bus driver and a nurse. How a tennis star came out of that combo, I do not know, but Sela can play, having beaten Andy Roddick (no. 7 in the world at the time) in 2010 in straight sets. He is only 5?9? and weighs 144 lbs. but this little guy could certainly make a splash in this year?s tournament.

Dick Norman ? I like Norman for several reasons. He is the oldest in the field at age 41, and stands at a towering 6?8?. The big man out of Germany will be hard to miss at this year?s tournament as he tries to take the ?young whippersnappers? to school. So come on, tennis fans, let?s show the big fella some love.

Treat Conrad Huey ? So, I kind of cheated, as Huey will not be playing in singles competition in this year?s tournament, but simply due to the fact that he has the coolest name in the field I had to show him some love. From the Philippines, it would be a ?treat? if Huey made some noise in the doubles field. Ok, bad pun ?

Flavio Cipolla ? If you couldn?t tell, Flavio is from Italy and has had moderate success on the tennis circuit so far in his career. He played somewhat well against Nadal in the thirdround of the U.S. Open in 2008 and should be able to parlay some of that success this year. Viva Italia.

Inigo Cervantes ? ?My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die?. Wrong Inigo? Cervantes is from Spain and this is his first Wimbledon, plus, he rocks the Anthony Davis unibrow. Sign me up!

David Nalbandian ? Nalbandian reigns in Argentina and has recently gained fame for his famous boot of a line judge in a recent tournament. He is no McEnroe, but hey, the guy wants to win! As long as he doesn?t "treat" (Conrad Huey) (OK, another bad pun) the line judge like a soccer ball, he has some high aspirations!

Potito Starace ? Another great name, Starace is from Italy and, unbeknownst to many, is the Pete Rose of the tennis world. In 2007, he was fined and given a suspension for betting on professional-tennis matches. His career record is 149-170, which is not that stellar, but hey, he might be able to make some money if he bets against himself, right?

MURPHY?S LAW: Andrews Out, Royce Arrives, Open Windows

By Chris Hassel

Erin Andrews is reportedly leaving ESPN. I tweeted that she would be replacing Andy on SoundOFF. Several actually took that tweet literally.?

The movie, ?Ted?, looks childish and profane, and I can?t wait to see it. Several people were tweeting, late last night, that they saw the midnight showing. One person even saw it at 2am! I hear good things. I?m excited to see it.?

Rockets fans don?t seem too excited about Royce White and the teams? two other 1st-round draft picks. Royce proved his doubters wrong at Iowa State. I?m sure he will do the same in Houston.?

24 women made the semi-finals in the 1500m, at the Olympic Trials ? a trio of them are native Iowans. Webster City?s, Jenny Simpson, was the only one to advance to the Sunday?s finals. Dowling Catholic alum, Katie Flood, and Tipton, Iowa native, Ashley Miller placed well outside the top-5.?

I was just about to take my car to the car-wash?and then it rained. I had better luck than Andy. The poor guy left his windows open in his truck. I think there was a duck swimming on the floor when he got in.?

I finally bought a meat thermometer. Now I?m not going to be scared to death every time I cook chicken breast.?

I?ve never been one to receive many compliments. That all changed when I found The Tie Bar. Go there. You won?t regret it.?

The IT Professor: Change Management and Agile Project ...

I came across a great explanation on the virtue of agile project management in the context of change management.
"I believe agile projects accommodate this uncertainty better. ?Fixed time boxes equal fixed schedule. ?Dedicated full-time team equals fixed budget. ?Scope is left flexible. ?The customer prioritizes scope. ?If you focus on highest business value first, delivered in regular intervals within a fixed budget, does i really matter if the scope changed?"
I found this quote from Jennifer Bleen to be a very concise way of conceptualizing the advantage of agile project management. ?The quote also helps illustrate when the agile project management method is most appropriate to use (projects with fluid business requirements).

Ancient Steppes Tribes History | International Education

The Eurasian Steppes tribes were a large group of people who had different cultures but shared the same ecoregion as their homeland. The steppe area is generally known to stretch from Romania through Mongolia or present-day Ukraine and Siberia, with parts existing in Hungary. Connecting Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe in economic and political ways, it has been a dynamic and influential hub throughout ancient history.

There were 8 main tribes of people who lived in Steppes, and most of them were horsemen. Horses were first domesticated before 3000 B.C., but it is known when exactly they were fully utilized by these nomads.

Here you will discover an introduction to these tribes and their culture. These groups consisted of the Huns, Kimmerians, Kushans, Parthians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Xiongnu, and Yuezhi. Most of these were nomadic, traveling great distances throughout their time in history.

History of Steppe Languages

It is theorized that the common ancestor of the Steppe tribe languages came from somewhere in Russia, but it has been found that all settlements west of Dzungaria were speaking Iranian languages until 500 A.D. Turkic languages eventually replaced the Iranian ones at this time, but it is not clearly understood why.

Trade in the Steppe Tribes

The Silk Road was one of the most famous routes of trade in the Steppe Tribes history, which started in the Guanzhong area of China. This ran all the way to the Tarim Basin along the Gansu Corridor and then further southwest to Greater Iran. At this point it turned in a southeast direction to India and west to Europe and the Middle East. Additionally, a branch was found going northwest near the Caspian Sea and northward to the Black Sea.

Trade was at its strongest when empires were in control of the steppe. This limited how many nomadic tribe people could find their way on to the route to tax it or steal whatever was passing through. An example of this is when the Chinese Emperor Wu of Han exerted his power.

Steppe Tribe Warfare

As horsemen tribes, the Steppe peoples engaged in warfare that was supported with supplies of their animals and land armies. Villages were often raided when on horse, since they could escape with the loot easily. In the case that a smaller tribe would attempt this and be faced with more serious numbers of a land army, they could retreat quickly with no concern. For these reasons, many tribes decided to place walls around their settlements to protect their people, land and resources.

The Walking Dead?s Lori Grimes Joins Tornado Thriller

Sarah Wayne Callies, who plays Lori Grimes on AMC?s TV adaptation of Rober Kirkman?s Image/Skybound comic series The Walking Dead, has signed on to star in an untitled actioner about a tornado, Deadline reports exclusively.

Even though no one is ever really safe on The Walking Dead, the article assures viewers that Lori won?t be leaving the show?at least not to accommodate the tornado movie. Rather, Callies will juggle the two while the movie?referred to as a ?found-footage natural disaster film??is in production.

One assumes that a ?found-footage? film means that it will have a visual style in the vein of movies like The Chernobyl Diaries and The Fourth Kind. According to the original story, it will??[follow] a group of high school teens dealing with the aftermath of a devastating tornado.?

Steve Quale, the second unit director on Avatar who recently directed Final Destination 5, will helm the movie.

Testing for Many Designer Drugs At Once

LilaG writes "Drug tests spot banned substances based on their chemical structures, but a new breed of narcotics is designed to evade such tests. These synthetic marijuana drugs, found in 'herbal incense,' are mere chemical tweaks of each other, allowing them to escape detection each time researchers develop a new test for one of the compounds. Now chemists have developed a method that can screen for multiple designer drugs at once, without knowing their structures. The test may help law enforcement crack down on the substances. The researchers used a technique called 'mass defect filtering,' which can detect related compounds all at once. That's because related compounds have almost equal numbers to the right of the decimal point in their molecular masses. The researchers tested their technique on 32 herbal products ... They found that every product contained one or more synthetic cannabinoid; all told, they identified nine different compounds in them ? two illegal ones and seven that are not regulated. The original paper appears (behind a paywall) in Analytical Chemistry." From the article: "The research is timely, too. 'Many drugs of abuse in the Olympics are designer drugs,' he [Gary Siuzdak] says, in the steroid family. Grabenauer plans to extend her method to other designer drug families."

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Defending champion Spain beat Croatia 1-0 with a late goal, while Italy beat Ireland 2-0 in the final Group C matches at the European Championship. Both teams advanced to the last eight, with the Spanish topping the group.

Here is a running account of Monday's action. All times are local to Poland.

___

2245: So Group C has been resolved and Tuesday will see the last two places in the knockout stage of the competition accounted for from Group D. England plays co-host Ukraine while France takes on Sweden, who are already out of the competition. England, Ukraine and France can all still qualify, but Ukraine knows only a win will do and all eyes will be on national idol Andriy Shevchenko to lead the side to victory. The group winner will take on Italy while the runner up will face defending champion Spain.

___

2243: Balotelli started to shout something when he scored Italy's second but a teammate swiftly put his hand over the controversial striker's mouth. Whatever it was, it must have been controversial.

___

2242: So Spain goes through as winner of Group C and Italy is the runner up. Italy deserved to win, while Spain was pushed all the way by Croatia, who will look back upon Srna's missed header as the best chance to have taken something from the game. That was Bilic's last match taking charge of the Croatian national team.

___

2238: FULL-TIME: Croatia 0, Spain 1.

___

2237: FULL-TIME: Italy 2, Ireland 0

___

2237: With his back to goal, Balotelli twists and volleys goalwards from a delivery on the right and Given does not stand a chance.

___

2234: GOAL! Italy 2, Ireland 0 (Balotelli)

___

2233: RED CARD! Keith Andrews, Ireland

___

2233: That surely seals it for Spain. Fabregas lifts the ball over the top of the defense and both Iniesta and Jesus Navas break the offside trap. Iniesta rolls it across the six yard area and Navas walks it home into an empty net.

___

2231: GOAL! Croatia 0, Spain 1 (Navas).

___

2227: There are some very nervous looking faces in the Spanish section of the stadium in Gdansk. If Croatia sneaks a goal here and holds on and wins, Spain will be out.

___

2223:Keith Andrews goes close for Ireland from a free kick. Damien Duff tees him up and Andrews drills a fierce low shot at goal but Buffon makes a good save. Good effort from Andrews.

___

2219: A little under 15 minutes to go in both games here. As it stands, Italy and Spain are through from Group C.

___

2217: David Silva is coming off for Cesc Fabregas, who is now the most attacking player on the field for Spain due to Torres being taken off earlier. For Italy, Antonio Di Natale is replaced by Mario Balotelli.

___

2213: Free kick right on the edge of the penalty area for Italy, in a position similar to where Pirlo scored against Croatia. Can he do the same again here against Ireland? No ? his effort curls over the bar to the delight of the cheering Irish fans.

___

2206: Substitution for Spain, Torres replaced by Jesus Navas.

___

2205: Croatia goes so close to taking the lead in Gdansk! Modric weaves away down the right before hitting a great pass over the Spanish defense and onto the head of Srna, who is denied at close range by a diving Casillas. The Croatia captain should have scored.

___

2200: Giorgio Chiellini hobbles off for Italy, and Leonardo Bonucci takes to the pitch in his place. The Italians will be hoping that is nothing too serious because an injury to one of its most experienced defenders will be a massive blow.

___

2159: Di Natale nearly scores for Italy, getting the ball on the left of the penalty area before shooting at the near post, but Given gets down well and palms the ball away. Italy is looking threatening.

___

2158: AP's Paul Logothetis in Gdansk: Another flare lit up by Croatia fans in the 52nd minute, in the corner of the stand, just as Fernando Torres nearly gets through for a chance.

___

2157: Iniesta nearly plays Torres through on goal in Gdansk but overhits his pass into the striker and Pletikosa comes out to claim the ball. It is a rare sight to see, Iniesta getting the wrong weight on the pass, as he is normally immaculate in possession.

___

2154: Great move from the Italians and it nearly ends with Cassano scoring his second goal of the game. He exchanges passes with Balzaretti and aims low but Dunne is there for Ireland to get the block in. Positive start to the second half from Italy.

___

2149: Both games are underway again. Top spot is up for grabs and, if results remain this way, Italy will be group winner.

___

2140: In Gdansk it has been a quiet game, with Croatia proving very difficult for Spain to break down. Slaven Bilic's side has offered virtually nothing offensively, but in defense has nullified the attacking poise of Torres, Silva and Iniesta. Torres has looked sharp after scoring twice against Ireland but no players have shone for the defending champion so far. In Poznan, the Italians lead at the break but Ireland has shown enough for it to believe it could still get something from this match. They have looked able to cause problems when they have got forward but lost their way as the first half progressed. As things stand, Italy is top of the group.

___

2130: HALFTIME: Italy 1, Ireland 0; Croatia 0, Spain 0

___

2125: Moments after Di Natale had a penalty shout turned away by the referee, his strike partner gives Italy the lead. Cassano scores with a glancing, near-post header from a corner by Pirlo. Duff, who was on the post, kicked the ball clear but it had already crossed the line. As it stands, Italy is top of the group and Spain is second.

___

2122: GOAL! Italy 1, Ireland 0 (Cassano)

___

2117: CROATIA VS. SPAIN: Torres has continued his lively form from the Ireland game, weaving into the penalty area on the right before shooting from an acute angle, forcing a save from Pletikosa. Sergio Ramos then brings a stop from the Croatia goalkeeper with a long-range effort. Spain is stepping it up a bit.

___

2110: ITALY VS. IRELAND: The already-eliminated Irish are enjoying their fair share of possession in the opening 20 minutes in Poznan. They do seem to be playing with a lot more freedom than was seen in their opening two matches and they are unbeaten in three fixtures against Italy under their Italian coach, Giovanni Trapattoni.

___

2105: CROATIA VS. SPAIN: Spain is wearing blue shirts with black shorts tonight instead of its famous red shirt because Croatia, which is ruled as the home team, plays in its favored red-and-white chequered shirt. Not many chances early on here.

___

2059: Paul Logothetis, AP reporter at Croatia vs. Spain: Croatian fans throw flare from upper tier and it comes flying down onto their own supporters sitting in lower tier in 6th minute at Arena Gdansk.

___

2052: ITALY VS. IRELAND: De Rossi with an early shot for Italy. Di Natale breaks down the right and switches the play with a floated cross over to De Rossi, who hits a left-foot volley from outside the penalty area that flies wide of the left post. It wasn't troubling Given in the Ireland goal, but a good start from the Italians.

CROATIA VS. SPAIN: Spain has started on the front foot against Croatia, but that packed midfield that Slaven Billic selected to frustrate the defending champions and their fluent passing game is holding strong in the opening exchanges.

___

2045: Both games have kicked off...

___

2037: Mario Balotelli drops to the bench for Italy, which starts with Antonio Di Natale in attack with Antonio Cassano. The Spanish players warming up on the pitch in Gdansk are wearing Knesio tape, which relaxes overused muscles while helping to rehabilitate recovering muscles.

___

2030: Spain and Croatia both have four points, Italy has two and Ireland none. So three teams could all end up with five points by the end of the two matches. Then things would get complicated, with various permutations coming into play. We'll keep you updated.

Spain is unchanged and that means another start for Fernando Torres, who scored twice in a 4-0 thrashing of Ireland on Thursday. Croatia drops striker Nikica Jelavic, so Mario Mandzukic plays up front on his own in a 4-5-1 formation. The Croatians will look to flood the midfield, where Spain is so strong.

___

2019: Ireland's players will be wearing black armbands tonight, commemorating the 18-year anniversary of shootings in Northen Ireland that killed six people. The match falls on the exact date of the attack and is especially poignant as it happened while the victims were watching Ireland play Italy in the 1994 World Cup on television in the rural village of Loughinisland.

___

2010: And here are the teams for Italy vs. Ireland:

Italy: Gianluigi Buffon, Ignazio Abate, Andrea Barzagli, Giorgio Chiellini, Federico Balzaretti, Andrea Pirlo, Claudio Marchisio, Thiago Motta, Daniele De Rossi, Antonio Di Natale, Antonio Cassano.

Ireland: Shay Given, John O'Shea, Richard Dunne, Sean St. Ledger, Stephen Ward, Aiden McGeady, Glenn Whelan, Keith Andrews, Damien Duff, Robbie Keane, Kevin Doyle.

___

2002: Here are the lineups for Croatia vs. Spain:

Croatia: Stipe Pletikosa, Ivan Strininc, Vedran Corluka, Gordon Schildenfeld, Domagoj Vida, Danijel Pranjic, Ivan Rakitic, Ognjen Vukojevic, Luka Modric, Darijo Srna, Mario Mandzukic.

Spain: Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Fernando Torres.

Is Buying Free Website Hosting Correct For Your Online Business ...

Free web hosting sound so tempting. Like everything else that is free , however , there is usually a catch. The catch is usually the incontrovertible fact that the web host will put adverts on your website over which you've got no control. This is the price you pay for your free internet site.

You can't blame the host. They have to generate earnings somehow. What better way than to promote their ads on your content. Each time someone comes on your internet site to go visit you, they are hit with a volley of advertisements. In some free internet sites, they could have a tough time not clicking on the adverts. The ads can move all over the page causing you or your friends to accidentally click on them. I suggest watching my hostgator reviews video to discover more about their service since I use them personally.

After someone has clicked on an ad on your free internet page, they can then expect to get a lot of e-mail from not just the site that they clicked on, but also any other similar business.

Free website hosting is fine if you want to have a social page, a resume page or perhaps a little site dedicated to a star. For business revenue nevertheless , it isn't the finest choice.

Although you'll have the most wonderful products for sale through your website at cheap prices, you can only sell them if people visit your internet site. When using free website hosting your are limited. In most situations, you may have one account and cannot post links between accounts. Most free web hosting is for personal purposes only and rarely permits business selling.

If you'd like to make cash on the internet, the way to do it is by utilising a dedicated server. This way, you can place any ads that you want on your website that will generate revenue for you as you're the web site host, but you may also use the extra space to make up other internet sites that will use keywords to draw people to your sales site. The content containing keywords shows up on the search engines and folks are directed to your tiny, content site. Here, they read some information and receive a link to your cash making site.

Free website hosting is nice for people who only desire to utilise the Internet parsimoniously, but not for making money. Even a shared server, which is a step up from a free server, and is essentially the same only gives you more space and bandwidth as well as freedom, has limits. To truly earn cash on the internet, you have to utilise all aspects, including the adverts and affiliate links.

Advertising on the internet can be free if you know how to utilize the search sites to generate interest in your products as well as utilize a dedicated server to its maximum abilities. While a free web hosting service is a fine idea for a private web site that will help you keep your family updated about your life, it isn't the way to earn income on the web.

To find out lots more about the best website hosting firms on the present market I highly recommend you watch my bluehost reviews as well as my justhost reviews today to learn which one is good for you.

State Department Warns Americans in Mexico to Be Cautious

The State Department is warning American travelers to Mexico to be on guard against possible retaliation after the arrests inside the U.S. of associates of the powerful Zetas drug cartel, ABC News reported.

Federal authorities on Tuesday arrested seven alleged associates of the Zetas cartel in New Mexico and Oklahoma for allegedly laundering drug money through horseracing in the U.S., ABC reported.

The travel warning came on the day of the arrests and the unsealing of the indictment. "Given the history and resources of this violent TCO, the U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to maintain a low profile and a heightened sense of awareness," the State Department warned, ABC News reported.

Those arrested included Jose Trevino Morales, the brother of Zetas leaders Miguel Angel and Oscar Omar Trevino Morales. The indictment said, according to ABC News, that the Zetas cartel steered drug money to Morales and his wife to buy, train and race quarterhorses.

The Zetas are based in Nuevo Laredo, just across the border from Laredo, Texas.

Former Columbus mayor gets 51 months for smuggling

Espinoza, former Columbus Police Chief Angelo Vega and former town trustee Blas Gutierrez were among a dozen defendants who have pleaded guilty in the case. Espinoza was the fourth to be sentenced.

Espinoza pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy, three counts of making false statements in the acquisition of firearms and three counts of smuggling firearms from the United States. He faced up to 65 years in prison.

With video games, it's the calm before the storm

1 day

By Winda Benedetti, Devin Coldewey, Todd Kenreck & Matt Rivera

The game business is in transition. Never has that been more?apparent than at this year's biggest video game show.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, which just wrapped up in Los Angeles, is the place where the biggest and best game companies tend to?unveil?their newest technologies and forthcoming games,?often?to much fanfare. But with few big surprises from the game powerhouses this year, E3 seemed to reveal an industry playing its cards close ... and holding its breath.

Yes, as?many had predicted,?this year's E3 was ... quieter ...?than in the past (if "quiet" can be truly?used to describe?this bombastic event). Sure, Microsoft unveiled its?SmartGlass app?and its forthcoming Spotify-like?Xbox Music service.?Sony showed off some exciting?exclusive games in the works.?And certainly?Nintendo?came out strong?behind its?forthcoming Wii U machine.

But this year's show seemed to be?missing that "Holy-Wow!" moment ...?or three.

Why? The smart bet says it's because the?video game powerhouses are quietly getting ready for the big storm to come.

That is, they're?getting ready for the?next generation of video game consoles?to launch. They're getting ready for some very big, and very interesting, years ahead. And, in fact, they're probably?still trying to figure out how to play the?cards they're holding close?in the?years ahead.

The Wii U?will be the first of this next generation of game consoles to arrive. And while much skepticism seems to remain about the machine, it is sure to give the game industry a jolt when it launches this holiday. And?while Microsoft and Sony didn't say a peep about their next gen machines at E3 this year ... everyone knows they're in the works. Many predict they'll be unveiled and perhaps even launched next year ...?or 2014 at the latest. And won't that be an interesting?showdown?

And here's the thing: If you knew where to look at E3 this year, there were plenty of signs that the industry is getting ready for big things to come. Developers and publishers showed off some fascinating?new games that many predict are being prepped for the next generation of consoles.?"Star Wars 1313,""Watch Dogs"?and "Beyond"?...?we're looking at you.

[Follow?THIS LINK?for a look back at E3 2012 in photos.]?

What does this mean for gamers? It means look to the horizon,?friends. This year's E3 may not have been the most exciting, and the?video game biz may not be at its most interesting place in history ... but here's betting that changes soon.

Meanwhile, here's a look at the hits and misses?from this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo as brought to you?by?our In-Game?team.

TODD KENRECK?- In-Game Editor

Hit: The Fans -- Unlike the?Penny Arcade Expo, E3 isn't a show geared toward the average gamer. It's a?trade show for the press, analysts and other game industry people. But dig past?all the business stuff at E3 and you'll find the heart of gaming beating strong.?People like Holly Conrad -- who makes creatures and costumes based on video?games -? give this show some genuine gamer soul. And it was great talking to video?game fan and violinist Lindsey Sterling. She has become something of an?internet superstar due in large part to her video?game music tributes (and a?hefty amount of talent) and performed at E3's Video Games Live concert Wednesday?night.

Miss: Staged moments -- E3 has a lot of heart (see?above) but there's also plenty of hype. All of the big game companies use E3 as?a platform to make some of their biggest announcements and kick off their?marketing campaigns. That means overblown press events and staged moments that?ring false are a common occurrence. This year the opening pressers had plenty?of bad theatrics and cheesy taglines. My request for next year:?More heart and less cheese please.

Hit: Gaming creatives -- All the marketing and hype aside, there are some incredibly creative people?behind the games we play. And one of the things I love about E3 is getting a?chance to meet these people and see their work. Seeing Quantic Dream's game "Beyond"?and getting to talk to director David Cage about it was a great experience. He?is on the bleeding edge of a new style of narrative and it was intriguing tohear the backstory about the tech demo "Kara." Meanwhile, game trailers have?always intrigued me and I got a chance to see how Blur Studios in L.A. makes?some of the biggest animations in the industry. It's great getting to meet game?creators who just want to talk about their games.

Hit: "Doom 3" virtual reality headset - The oddest surprise of E3 wasn't a big announcement but a?small one. John Carmack and Bethesda were showing off a homebrew pair of 3-D virtual?reality goggles that will work with "Doom 3 BFG" when it?launches in the?fall. This head-mounted display -? which tracks the movement of your head so that?you can literally look around inside the game -- felt quicker and more useful than?a mouse. I have never had a gadget make me feel so immersed in a game.

DEVIN?COLDEWEY?- In-Game reporter

Hit: "The Last of Us"/"Watch Dogs"?-- I have to join the rest of the gaming community in lauding "The Last of Us" and "Watch Dogs." Not only are they new titles instead of franchises, but they're ambitious, interesting, and modern. I have some issues -- the gunplay in "Watch Dogs" seems kind of incongruous with the deliberate strategizing elsewhere, and "The Last of Us" will need to work hard not to glorify the violence it portrays.

Hit: Wii U?-- I got a relaxed, behind-the-scenes playthrough with a few of the games and while I think Nintendo is mis-handling the whole thing, the fact is that these games are just plain fun. You pick it up, you get it,?you have fun -- it's that simple.

Hit:??"Planetside 2"?-?This game is kind of what I always hoped the next "Tribes" would be like. Taking part in big battles all over a huge planet, lots of loadouts, big structures -- I can't wait.

Miss: "Medal of Honor"?Warfighter"?--?Something really jarred me about this one.?The game itself doesn't seem to offer anything new at all, and the multiplayer is a tasteless pitting of friendly countries' soldiers against one another, with no reason or context other than patriotic brutality. Can't we do something original around warfare instead of the same chest-thumping garbage again and again?

Miss: Poorly staged press conferences?-- What the gaming community craves right now is people who love games being genuine about it, not half-baked?celebrity appearances and executives droning on?about how a game will revolutionize this or that. The games with the most buzz this year were just played on stage, plain and simple. People saw them and thought "wow, I really want to play that." It's not a new problem, but the pomp and the stilted jokes are only getting worse. Show us the games.

WINDA BENEDETTI?- In-Game reporter
?
Hit: Original games --?At a time when so many video games seem to be sequels, I was thrilled to see some really interesting, original games make a big splash at E3. ?"Beyond,"?"The Last of Us,"?"Dishonored,"?"Watch Dogs" -- they're all still in early development but just seeing developers working on games that present entirely new ideas makes me really excited to be a gamer and to see what else they have in store for us.

Miss: Anticipated?Games?-- For all of the interesting games that were revealed at E3 this year, there were some big names?that were missing. "Grand Theft Auto V," "Destiny," "The Last Guardian," "Half-Life 3." Where-oh-where were thee?
?
Miss: New hardware?--?We all know Microsoft and Sony are working on the next generation of game consoles. And I'm sure they have good reasons for not revealing anything about them at this year's E3. But it would have gone a long way toward pumping some excitement into an event that sets the tone for the industry if one of them had decided to give us a look at what they're working on. We gamers love this kind of stuff. And an E3 without a big hardware revelation ... well, it's just not the same.

Hit: Wii U GamePad -- I know there's a lot of skepticism about the Wii U and its GamePad but I'm intrigued. I really do think having a second window on our games could make playing more interesting and I liked the way some of the games that will launch for the Wii U are going to make use of the GamePad. "ZombieU," "Pikmen 3," "Batman Arkahm City: Armored Edition" -- they make me?think I'd like to own a Wii U.
?
Miss: Wii U details?-- Nintendo talked a lot about the Wii U ... but didn't answer many of our most burning questions. What are its technical specs, when exactly does it launch and, most importantly, how much will the thing cost? If Nintendo wants people to get behind their machine at this critical time, they should have dished some more details.

MATT RIVERA - msnbc.com?video producer

Hit: "The?Last of Us" revelation -- When Sony unveiled "The Last of Us" at their big press event, the crowd reacted with a level of attention and emotional involvement that you would expect at the nearby Stanley Cup Finals. It might be a PR stunt to show a rehearsed game snippet to a crowd of fans, but it's still exciting to watch a solitary game, like "The Last of Us," elicit cheers from an audience in the thousands. In the future,?that game will be played by individuals at home, alone. It will never again reach that level of shared, in-person experience.?And to be there, and to feel the room become emotionally locked on a game that celebrates strong writing and drama, was exciting.

Miss:?Mobile gaming?-- Social and mobile gaming giants Zynga and Gree made their first-ever appearance at E3 this year. ?And yet, if you didn't know better, you could walk around the show?floor and not realize that there is a booming mobile gaming movement happening outside, in the hands of commuters and kids everywhere. Where are the giant Angry Birds and Doodlejump statues??As more tablets are sold and more powerful hardware makes its way inside of phones, the potential market for mobile gaming will continue to grow. And yet this trend is virtually absent from E3.

THD N2-A Laptop Runs Android ICS, Priced at $149

The term ?Smartbook? has been kicking around the tech industry for some time now, but has never really taken a hold. ?That probably won?t change, but one company, THD, is taking another crack at it. ?Sure, it?s not likely to catch on, but it won?t be because they haven?t put together a beautiful peice of hardware.

Unveiled at the recent Computex show, the?THD N2-A looks a lot like a MacBook Air, but it runs android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. ?As for hardware specs, the 13 inch screen has a?1366?768 resolution, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, a full keyboard, a trackpad, and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi. ?Unfortunately this isn?t a Google certified Android device, which means it lacks features like Gmail, Google Play Store, and Maps.

The notebook will retail for a very competitive $149, but at the moment is only available to retailers, so if you can?t wait then you will need to pony up about $74,000 for a lot of 500 devices.

AP Source: Saints make new offer to QB Drew Brees

(AP) ? The New Orleans Saints have made a new contract offer to record-setting quarterback Drew Brees, said a person familiar with the situation.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the team and the quarterback have not publicly discussed the new offer. The person did not provide details about financial changes in the new offer, but added, "as always, there is a lot to get through and no deal is imminent."

The Saints have placed their one-year franchise tag on Brees, barring him from negotiating with other teams. Brees has said he wants to remain in New Orleans but has skipped voluntary practices and this week's minicamp while holding out for a long-term deal.

If a deal were to get done over the weekend, Brees would be able to attend the Saints' final set of voluntary offseason practices next week.

Brees was in New Orleans on Thursday, but not for contract negotiations.

He attended a City Council hearing to support a zoning ordinance required for a Jimmy Johns sandwich shop he will open not far from his New Orleans home in the city's historic Uptown district.

The council voted unanimously in favor of the variance, but Brees declined to be interviewed or make any comments about football as he was escorted to a waiting car outside City Hall.

Brees boarded a flight back to San Diego Thursday afternoon.

Brees, who joined the Saints as a free agent in 2006, has during the past six seasons completed more passes (2,488) for more yards (28,394) and more touchdown passes (201) than any other quarterback in the NFL. His 67.8 percent completion rate spanning the past six seasons also tops the league.

Arriving in New Orleans the season after Hurricane Katrina struck, Brees has become arguably the most popular sports figure in the city's history. In addition to leading the club to its lone Super Bowl title in the 2009 season, Brees has become a civic pillar of the community. He and wife Brittany have worked through their Brees Dream foundation to sponsor about $8 million in projects primarily aimed at improving the lives of children in the area through the refurbishing of schools or renovation of athletic fields and facilities. His foundation also has supported the arts, along with hospital facilities for cancer patients.

In 2011, Brees set NFL single-season records with 468 completions, 5,476 yards passing and a completion percentage of 71.2. His prolific passing numbers helped the Saints set a new NFL high for total offensive yards in a season with 7,474.

He led the Saints to a 13-3 regular season record and second NFC South Division title in three seasons. New Orleans defeated Detroit in the first round of the playoffs before falling in the final seconds of their second-round game at San Francisco.

This offseason marks the first time Brees, 33, has had the opportunity to negotiate a major, long-term deal with the leverage provided by a string of injury-free seasons highlighted by a slew of individual and team statistical records in addition to a championship.

He commanded only second-round money when he was drafted by San Diego, and the Chargers placed the one-year franchise tag on him when that deal ran out in 2005. The right-handed Brees then had an injury the following season that required major surgery to his throwing shoulder, and which left him with few major offers during the 2006 offseason.

He wound up signing a six-year deal with New Orleans worth about $60 million, which left him playing for well below what the top quarterbacks in the league earned during the past few seasons.

Brees is now expecting to be paid in the range of the league's best quarterbacks, and Peyton Manning, who is three years older than Brees and sat out last season while recovering from neck surgery, recently signed a contract with Denver paying him $19.2 million a year.

Brees has until July 16 to agree to a new long-term deal. Otherwise he will have to either play under the franchise tag that would pay him a little more than $16 million for one season, or sit out.

Getting Brees back with the team would help restore a sense of normalcy after an offseason plagued by the NFL's bounty scandal, which resulted in the season-long suspensions of head coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathan Vilma, among other sanctions.

So far, Chase Daniel has worked as the No. 1 quarterback during six voluntary offseason practices and this week's three-day minicamp that ended Thursday. The Saints also gave veteran Luke McCown a tryout during minicamp and decided on Thursday to sign him as well, meaning he'll likely be back for next week's offseason practices and possibly training camp.

Saints players and coaches have said it is odd not having Brees around, but added that they are confident his absence won't unduly hurt the team as long as he's back by training camp.

Assistant head coach Joe Vitt, who has been tapped to handle head coaching duties this season, except while serving his own six-game suspension resulting from the bounty probe, said he has been talking with Brees regularly and asking the quarterback for input on training camp, which opens in late July.

"Nobody is going to come in better shape than Drew," Vitt said earlier this week. "Drew is working extremely hard right now. He's mastered the system. (Brees' contract) will get done with both parties getting together. ... They are both working hard at it."

Notes: The Saints also signed running back Joe Banyard after the completion of minicamp. Like McCown, Banyard was with the Saints on a three-day tryout this week. ... Starting RT Zach Strief wound sat out a fourth-straight practice on Thursday after rolling his right ankle in the opening practice of minicamp. He said the injury is minor, that he rested as a precaution, and that he expects to practice next week. ... RB Chris Ivory sat out a second straight day with what Vitt has said is a minor hamstring pull. ... The Saints announced that they will hold training camp, as usual, at their suburban New Orleans headquarters and that it will open on July 27.
