New York "Cannibal Cop" trial opens; suspect's dark fantasies cited

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York City police officer accused of plotting to kidnap and cannibalize women had been having dark fantasies since he was a teenager, but had no intention of ever turning those thoughts into reality, his attorney said on Monday at the start of his federal trial.

Attorney Julia Gatto also said that Officer Gilberto Valle, who faces 20 years to life in prison if convicted, talked online about torturing his own wife and her female friends and colleagues.

"What really turns on is the idea of a woman - oiled, bound, laid out on a platter with an apple in her mouth, about to be cooked," Gatto told jurors in opening arguments. "That's his dirty little secret."

She argued that Valle was engaged in online sexual fantasy role play involving a little-known internet subculture where people with unconventional desires gather to act them out in cyberspace but with no intention of every carrying out criminal acts.

"There are literally thousands and thousands of people doing the same thing, online, every day," she told jurors, saying that government investigators misunderstood what they found on his computer.

Federal prosecutors countered that Valle, who has pleaded not guilty, took the plot beyond fantasy and into real life when he "engaged in surveillance of some of the women he was targeting."

Prosecutors say Valle 28, improperly accessed a federal law enforcement database to get information about one woman, and met a second women - a former classmate - for brunch.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall Jackson also said Valle searched online for homemade recipes for chloroform to subdue victims and recipes for cooking human flesh.

"Make no mistake," Jackson told jurors. "Officer Valle was deadly serious."

Valle's estranged wife testified Monday that she placed web tracking software on the couple's computer last fall after she said he began acting strange. When asked what she discovered, she burst into tears.

Kathleen Mangan-Valle, 27, said she found pictures of herself and her female friends and colleagues, attached to emails her husband sent discussing extreme brutality and murder.

"I was going to be hung up by my feet and my throat slit," Mangan-Valle testified, choking back tears.

She said Valle also discussed kidnapping one of her friends and delivering her to a New Jersey mechanic for torture and murder. Another was to be "burned alive" and two more would be "raped in front of each other to heighten their terror," she added.

Mangan-Valle continued to cry as she quoted emails she said she found in which her husband discussed "driving a spit through their wombs over and over again."

"He kept saying the suffering was for his own enjoyment,'' she said, sobbing.

Egypt insists food supply secure as wheat imports dive

CAIRO/LONDON (Reuters) - Egypt's wheat imports are sharply down this year as it endures economic and political crisis, but state and private buyers insist they still have funds to keep the nation supplied with its staple bread.

Egyptian officials and traders acknowledge the government's problems with a rising budget deficit and falling currency reserves, but say the state is allocating priority financing for wheat imports. They are also pinning some of their hopes on an increase in domestic production.

Foreign traders and financiers remain skeptical, pointing to a big drop both in wheat stocks - to about three months' supply from over seven last October - and in the number of grains ships arriving at Egyptian ports.

This, they believe, is evidence that the state grains supplier, the General Authority for Supply Commodities, (GASC) is facing problems in maintaining imports.

"It's an ongoing concern that the political and economic turmoil is making it a challenge for GASC to import wheat," said Karel Valken, global head of trade and commodity finance at Rabobank.

Egypt has a history of bread riots but maintained supplies of heavily subsidized flat loaves - which sell to the poor for just 5 piastres (less than 1 U.S. cent) - throughout the popular uprising that overthrew president Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

The man who until last week organized Egypt's state wheat purchases, Nomani Nomani, dismissed any suggestion that the government had failed to produce promised funding or guarantees to ensure that shipments could go ahead.

"The state has not at any point reduced its payments or failed to deliver to us financial guarantees," Nomani, who now advises the supply minister, told Reuters on Sunday.[ID:nL6N0BO1GE] As vice chairman of GASC, Nomani was arguably the most powerful man on the global wheat market as Egypt is traditionally the world's biggest importer of the grain.

President Mohamed Mursi's government faces daunting economic problems. The Egyptian pound has fallen more than 8 percent since the start of January, and foreign currency reserves have tumbled to $13.6 billon in January from $36 billion before the fall of Mubarak.

A HEAVY STRAIN

The pound's drop is putting a heavy strain on the government budget as it has pushed up the cost of state subsidies on energy and food, much of which is purchased in dollars.

At the same time detailed negotiations for a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund have yet to get underway, and Egyptian politics are in turmoil due to disputes between the ruling Islamists and opposition parties over a new constitution and parliamentary elections due to start in April.

Nevertheless, private traders discount talk of delivery disruptions, payments problems or shortages so far.

"If you're asking about any delays in shipping schedules due to contractual liability performance on GASC's side due to a shortage of foreign currency, the answer as of today, as we speak, is no," said Hassan Abdel Fadil, chief executive of Egyptian trader Venus.

"It's obvious to the entire world that there is pressure on the dollar in Egypt, but so far they've been doing well," Fadil told Reuters on Saturday.

"There is a good local supply, both on the private side and on the GASC side. People keep talking about shortage of stocks - no, it's not true, neither on the private nor on the GASC side."

Nevertheless, the figures are striking. GASC has bought 235,000 tons of wheat since January 1, about a third of what it purchased in the same period a year earlier.

And dry bulk vessels over 50,000 deadweight tons (dwt) - the kind of ships used to carry wheat - are arriving in sharply reduced numbers.

Altogether 30 have called at Egyptian ports from the country's main wheat supplier countries in the January to February period. This is down from 59 vessels in the same period last year, ship-tracking data from maritime intelligence publisher IHS Fairplay showed.

Egypt normally buys strategically to ensure it has wheat stocks equal to at least six months' consumption in its silos. By contrast, the government said last week that it has stocks to last until May 29, or just over three months.

The cabinet said this would rise to about four months under current international contracts, but this falls well short of the almost seven months' cover in October last year.

GETTING BY ON STOCKS

Such figures encourage a belief that the dollar shortage is forcing Egypt to import less and make up the shortfall from reserves.

"We've done some business there in the last few weeks and didn't have too much trouble getting paid, but our normal buyers now are saying they are going to live on the stocks they have on hand for the next little while," said Wayne Bacon, president of grain trader Hammersmith Marketing, which is involved with private importers. "They're waiting to see if they can get any foreign currency to pay for things."

Egypt faces a huge task in feeding its people. Most of its territory is desert, and what little land that can be cultivated by using the waters of the Nile is under heavy pressure from development. With its population of 84 million growing fast, buildings are springing up on agricultural land.

Nomani, who left his job at GASC saying only that he had been promoted, said measures to boost domestic production were paying off at a time of difficulty for state finances.

"We have proper planning. We were aware of the conditions the state is going through, and we made a list of factors to rely on for securing our essential supply of wheat, including offering attractive incentives and prices to local farmers," he said.

Nomani expected local wheat production to increase by "at least 500,000 tons in 2012/2013, if not more, raising the amount of local wheat to 4.2 million tons".

This would mark an impressive rise from 2.6 million in 2010/2011, but overall needs are greater.

Egypt imports about half the 18.8 million tons of wheat it consumes a year, with business split roughly evenly between private importers and GASC. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had estimated Egypt's imports at 9.5 million tons in 2012/13.

Nomani said the government had budgeted 11 billion Egyptian pounds ($1.6 billion) for domestic wheat purchases this financial year, which runs from July to June.

Nevertheless, the state is short not only of dollars but also domestic currency. The budget deficit in the last six months of 2012 was 5.1 percent of economic output, up sharply from the previous year.

Planning Minister Ashraf al-Araby predicted the deficit could hit 10 percent of GDP in the financial year to June - a level Egypt cannot afford without outside help.

Cairo's main hope is completing the IMF deal that was agreed in principle last November but put on hold during street violence the following month.

Admitting that foreign direct investment had all but dried up, Araby said the government planned to invite an IMF mission to Cairo within a week.

The funds are sorely needed. Egypt suffered bread riots in 1977 when the state tried to curb subsidies, and a dive in the pound in 2003 forced up the food subsidy bill by 40 percent. Riots erupted again in 2008 over high food prices and low wages.

"I don't think they can afford to jeopardize their subsidies at the moment," said Hammersmith's Bacon. "They're going to have to find funds to finance their wheat and sugar purchases because there's just too many people in the country who can cause a lot of trouble if they don't."

Lahore:? Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik says the national team has the ability to bounce back in the One-day series against South Africa after a disappointing show in the Test series. Malik, Kamran and Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz, Shahid Afridi, Ahmed Shahzad, Zulfiqar Babar, Asad Ali will join the national team for the series of two T20s and five one-dayers.

"Cricket is a funny game once you run into a bad patch it is difficult to come out of it unfortunately we had a bad start in the Test series and we couldn't get out of it. I don't think our team is as bad as the results show," Malik told PTI at the Gaddafi stadium.

He said Pakistan had a good Test side but unfortunately things didn't work out in South Africa.

"But we need to now just move on and try to reverse the results in the one-day series although it will be a challenge," he said.

Malik said Pakistan had a very good record in T20 and ODI matches and was capable of producing different results and pose a strong challenge for South Africa.

"It is a good opportunity for us to show everyone we are a far better side than the results suggest in the Test matches."

Malik, who is now considered only for T20 or ODI matches said the coming series was also a personal challenge for him.

"I was in South Africa late last year for the Champions League so I know the conditions are different there but I have been playing lot of domestic cricket and I know that I can do well," he added.

Malik, who was captain from 2007 to 2009, said he had also played well in the one-day series in India.

"I am feeling good about my cricket and I am ready to bat at any position for Pakistan against South Africa. Having played domestic cricket also I am ready for the challenge."

Malik scored a brilliant 153 in his last domestic match in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy last week while leading Sialkot region into the final of the tournament.

"I also wanted to play in the final I was even willing to play for just three days but the board said we have to leave tonight for South Africa and get some time to acclimatize to conditions there."

Malik said people needed to support the Pakistan team despite its whitewash in the tests against South Africa.

"You must understand South Africa is the number one test side and they played as per their reputation," he stated.

Reviews

In the?latest update?to the?Retina MacBook Pro, some models got price cuts, some received slightly faster processors, and some got a healthy bump in the amount of RAM. Anyone who purchased a Retina MacBook Pro prior to this refresh shouldn?t kick themselves for making the leap, but the reduced cost for the 13in models and faster performance for the 15in models make these thin, light, and fast laptops a better deal than ever.

Let?s be specific

From the outside, the 2013 Retina MacBook Pros look identical to the 2012 models. Our previous reviews of the original?13in?and?15in?Retina MacBook Pros contain more details on the look and feel of these laptops. But here?s a short summary of the specifications.

All of the Retina MacBook Pros have two USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt ports, a MagSafe 2 power connector, a headphone jack, and an SDXD card slot. As with last year?s Retina MacBook Pros, RAM is not user-upgradable; but luckily, the standard 8GB of memory is sufficient for all but the most demanding users. If you require more than 8GB of RAM, you will need to move to a 15in Retina MacBook Pro which can be configured with 16GB of RAM.

The 13in models feature LED backlit screens with 2560-by-1600-pixel resolution and a pixel density of 227 pixels per square inch. This extremely high resolution ? four times higher than that of the MacBook Pros with standard screens ? makes the individual pixels in an image virtually undetectable. The 13in Retina MacBook Pro is just 1.9cm thick and weighs 1.62kg. The non-Retina 13in MacBook Pro is 2.41cm thick and weighs 2.06kg.

The 13in base model?s specifications remain unchanged, but its price has dropped to $1649. It has a 2.5GHz dual-core Core i5 processor with Intel?s?Turbo Boost?technology, which allows the processor to reach speeds of up to 3.1GHz for short periods of high demand. The Core i5 processors in the 13in MacBook Pros do not support?Hyper-Threading, an Intel technology that allows applications to access two virtual cores for each physical processor. The base model has 8GB of 1600MHz memory, 128GB of speedy flash storage, and integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000.

At $1849, the new high-end 13in Retina MacBook Pro costs $350 less than its predecessor. Even with the reduced price, the system comes with a slightly faster processor ? a 2.6GHz Core i5, versus the 2.5GHz Core i5 in the previous model. Like the $1649 model, this system comes with 8GB of 1600MHz memory (not upgradable) and Intel?s integrated HD Graphics 4000. The $1849 model includes 256GB of flash storage, twice the capacity of the $1649 13in Retina MacBook Pro.

The new 15in Retina MacBook Pros have 2880-by-1800-pixel resolution, with a slightly lower pixel density ? 220 ppi ? than the 13in Retina model. The 15in Retina MacBook Pro is actually 1mm thinner than the 13in Retina MacBook Pro, and weighs in at 2.02kg, about the same as the non-Retina 13in MacBook Pro.

The new 15in models cost the same as their predecessors ($2499 and $3199), but the base model now has a faster, 2.4GHz Core i7 quad-core processor and supports both Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost. It also features the same 8GB of 1600MHz memory (upgradable to 16GB for $240 more, but only at the point of purchase) and 256GB of flash storage as before, as well as both integrated and discrete graphics in the form of Intel?s HD Graphics 4000 and Nvidia?s GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory. The high-end 15in Retina MacBook Pro has a faster 2.7GHz Core i7 quad-core processor, a whopping 16GB of 1600MHz memory, and the same 500GB of flash storage and dual integrated/discrete graphics as the previous high-end standard-configuration Retina MacBook Pro.

All about performance

To see how these new updates affect performance, we ran our?Speedmark 8?overall system performance benchmark suite, which helps us compare the new system?s results to those of previous systems and other Apple portables. The new 13in 2.6GHz Retina MacBook Pro earned a Speedmark 8 score of 190, about 3 percent faster than the 13in base model with its 2.5GHz Core i5 processor. With both systems sharing so many specifications (graphics, flash storage, RAM), its not surprising that most tests results were very close, and some were even identical.

The high-end 13in 2.6GHz Core i5?Retina MacBook Pro?s Speedmark 8 score was 24 percent higher than that of the high-end 13in 2.9GHz Core i7?standard MacBook Pro, due almost entirely to the Retina MacBook Pro?s faster flash storage. The 13in Retina MacBook Pro was faster in seven tests, including a file duplication test that took five times longer to complete on the non-Retina MacBook Pro?s standard 5400-rpm hard drive. The standard MacBook Pro, with its discrete graphics and speedier Core i7 processor, was faster in seven tests, including MathematicaMark 8, Portal 2, and Cinebench?s OpenGL and CPU tests.

If you?re trying to decide between a MacBook Air and a Retina MacBook Pro, you?ll be interested to know that the Retina MacBook Pro was 14 percent faster overall, with processor-intensive tests showing the biggest differences. The Retina MacBook Pro was 40 percent faster than the MacBook Air in our Handbrake test, 17 percent faster in the Cinebench CPU test, and 7 percent faster in the MathematicaMark 8 test. The extra RAM in the MacBook Pro helped it earn a 34 percent higher productivity score in PCMark running on Windows 7 using VMWare Fusion.

Despite having twice the amount of RAM and slightly faster processor, the new high-end 15in Retina MacBook Pro was just 3 percent faster than the previous high-end 15in model that had the same graphics and flash storage. The new high-end model was 5 percent faster overall than the new base 15in Retina model. When comparing the performance of the new low-end 15in Retina MacBook Pro and the new high-end 13in Retina MacBook Pro, you see a very large difference between the two, with the 15in model being 47 percent faster overall. In both Portal 2 and Cinebench?s OpenGL tests, the discrete graphics in the 15in model displayed more than twice as many frames per second as the 13in model?s integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Bottom line

The new Retina MacBook Pros represent a subtle refresh to the line of beautiful, ultra-high-resolution portables introduced last year. The price reductions for the 13in models make them a better bargain than before, while the 16GB of RAM in the high-end 15in MacBook Pro might help take the sting out of the $3199 price tag.

GOP House panel chairman will consider gun bills

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said Friday that he's interested in writing legislation this year improving background checks for gun buyers and cracking down on illegal firearms sales.

In an interview, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., provided little detail about his plans. But he said the federal background check system should be fixed to make sure more people with serious mental illnesses don't get firearms.

Criminals and people with significant mental problems are among those barred by federal law from buying guns. States are supposed to supply the federal background check system with purchasers' mental health records, but often they do not because of privacy rules and other barriers.

"We want to improve that system to try to screen out people who should not be able to possess firearms," Goodlatte said.

Until now, House GOP leaders have only said they will wait to act until the Democratic-run Senate produces legislation. The Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., could begin writing its own gun curb measure in the next week or two.

Goodlatte did not say when his panel might write legislation, but he said he would not necessarily wait for the Senate to pass legislation.

President Barack Obama has proposed near-universal background checks. Currently, the checks are only required for purchases from federally licensed gun dealers, not sales between private individuals at gun shows, online or elsewhere.

Goodlatte said his legislation would be unlikely to require private background checks for private gun sales between people.

Obama also wants to ban assault weapons and ammunition magazines holding more than 10 rounds. Goodlatte said he opposes those ideas.

Goodlatte did not say when his panel might write legislation. His comments that the House would begin acting on gun legislation were first reported by Roll Call, a newspaper that covers Congress.

Details remain unclear about the mental health of Adam Lanza, who shot 26 people to death at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school in December. But shooters in some recent mass shootings have been afflicted with mental problems, including those involved in the Virginia Tech killings in 2007 and the 2011 Tucson attack that killed six people and wounded 13, including then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.

As other congressional Republicans have done, Goodlatte also complained that current gun laws are not being enforced sufficiently. He and other GOP members of the Judiciary Committee wrote letters Friday to Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, asking for data on federal firearms prosecutions for the past 11 years.

NKorea to allow mobile Internet for foreigners

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) -- North Korea will soon allow foreigners to tweet, Skype and surf the Internet from their cellphones, iPads and other mobile devices in its second relaxation of controls on communications in recent weeks. However, North Korean citizens will not have access to the mobile Internet service to be offered by provider Koryolink within the next week.

Koryolink, a joint venture between Korea Post & Telecommunications Corporation and Egypt's Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding SAE, informed foreign residents in Pyongyang on Friday that it will launch a third generation, or 3G, mobile Internet service no later than March 1.

The announcement comes just weeks after North Korea began allowing foreigners to bring their own cellphones into the country to use with Koryolink SIM cards, reversing a longstanding rule requiring most visitors to relinquish their phones at customs and leaving many without easy means of communication with the outside world.

The two changes in policy mean foreigners in North Korea will have unprecedented connectivity while living, working or traveling in a country long regarded as one of the most isolated nations in the world.

However, wireless Internet will not yet be offered to North Koreans, who are governed by a separate set of telecommunication rules from foreigners. North Koreans will be allowed to access certain 3G services, including SMS and MMS messaging, video calls and subscriptions to the state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper ? but not the global Internet.

The lack of Internet access in North Korea has put the country at the bottom of Internet freedom surveys. Though North Korea is equipped for broadband Internet, only a small, approved segment of the population has access to the World Wide Web.

During a visit to Pyongyang early last month, Google's executive chairman pressed the North Koreans to expand access to the Internet. Eric Schmidt noted that it would be "very easy" for North Korea to offer Internet on Koryolink's fast-expanding 3G cellphone network.

"As the world becomes increasingly connected, the North Korean decision to be virtually isolated is very much going to affect their physical world and their economic growth," he wrote in a Jan. 20 blog post after returning to the United States. "It will make it harder for them to catch up economically. It is their choice now, and in my view, it's time for them to start, or they will remain behind."

Soon after Schmidt's visit, Google unveiled maps of North Korea with more details based on contributions from foreigners using satellite images and publicly available information to map the country. Before, North Korea was left mostly blank in Google Maps but with the update, Pyongyang and major North Korean cities are shown with street names, parks, roads, train stops and monuments.

Cellphone use has multiplied in North Korea since Orascom built a 3G network more than four years ago. More than a million people are now using mobile phones in North Korea, where the network now covers most major cities, according to Orascom.

Chinese-made Huawei cellphones sold by Koryolink are not cheap, with the most basic model costing about $150, and the governments restricts North Koreans from phoning abroad or foreigners from their cellphones. Still, mobile phones have become a must-have accessory among not only the elite in Pyongyang but also the middle class in cities such as Kaesong and Wonsan.

Foreigners, meanwhile, can now purchase SIM cards at the airport or at Koryolink shops for 50 euros ($70). Calls abroad range from 0.38 euros a minute to Switzerland and France and more than 5 euros a minute to the U.S. Calls to South Korea remain prohibited.

Starting next week, foreigners will be allowed to purchase monthly mobile Internet data plans for use with a USB modem or on mobile devices using their SIM cards. Prices for the service haven't been announced yet.

The expansion of cellphone and Internet services ? at least for foreigners ? comes as North Korea promotes the development of science and technology as a means of improving its moribund economy.

Late leader Kim Jong Il was revealed to have been a Mac user. His Macbook Pro, or a replica, is enshrined at the Kumsusan mausoleum where his body lies in state.

Current leader Kim Jong Un, meanwhile, was shown in a recent photo with a more mobile computing accessory: a smartphone.

Accel Telecom unveils Voyager, an Android smartphone that wants to stay in the car (video)

Accel Telecom launches first carconnected smartphone, Voyager

Remember the days of yore when carphones used to be attached to the car -- permanently? Accel Telecom wants to take you back there with the Voyager, an Android smartphone with car-centric functions that can stay put in your vehicle. To start with, the handset will feature a dedicated Waze launcher key for GPS navigation duties, and will also sport "high level noise reduction and echo cancellation," along with hands-free voice activation. Other features include a 3G-WiFi hotspot, a "driver-centric" design with large physical keys, multiple car-focused apps and "crystal clear, echo free sound quality." Interestingly, it'll also connect to your vehicle's on-board diagnostics system via RS232 or Bluetooth and ping you if any parts are about to break off. Accel told us that it'll launch Voyager in Europe and the US "with operators that offer a second sim device," to let you share your current phone number. There's no sign of pricing yet, but there is PR and a video after the break.

Nigeria extremists claim abduction of 7 foreigners

Map locates kidnapping, Nigeria

Map locates kidnapping, Nigeria

(AP) ? A little-known Islamic extremist group claimed responsibility Monday for the kidnapping of seven foreign workers from northern Nigeria, threatening their safety if anyone tried to intervene and free them.

The group that calls itself Ansaru issued a short statement to journalists, later obtained by The Associated Press, in which it said its fighters kidnapped the foreigners Saturday night from a construction company's camp at Jama'are, a town about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi state.

Authorities have said those kidnapped include one British citizen, one Greek, one Italian, three Lebanese and one Filipino, all employees of a Lebanese construction company called Setraco.

The statement said Ansaru committed the abduction "based on the transgression and atrocities shown to the religion of Allah by the European countries in many places such as Afghanistan and Mali."

"It is stressed that any attempt or act contrary to our conditions by the European nations or by the Nigerian government will" endanger the hostages, the statement read. The statement offered no conditions, suggesting the group would later contact authorities to make a ransom demand.

Police and security officials in Nigeria did not immediately respond the statement. Greek and Italian diplomats have confirmed their citizens were abducted, while British officials have only said they continue to investigate the claims. The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, issued a statement earlier Monday saying none of those taken were U.S. citizens.

Ansaru declared themselves as a breakaway group in January 2012 from Boko Haram, the north's main terrorist group. Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege," has launched a guerrilla campaign of bombings and shootings across Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north. Boko Haram is blamed for at least 792 killings last year alone, according to an AP count.

Ansaru's aims are unknown ? but they have a different message from Boko Haram, according to Raffaello Pantucci, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute.

"They seem to disagree with some of Boko Haram's strategies ? in particular, they disagreed with Boko Haram's tendency to kill Muslims," Pantucci said. "They seem to be more internationally focused, they talk a lot more in global jihad terms and they seem very eager to cultivate that side of their image. It makes them more dangerous."

The attack Saturday in Jama'are saw gunmen first assault a local prison and burn police trucks, authorities said. Then the attackers blew up a back fence at the construction company's compound and took over, killing a guard in the process, witnesses and police said.

The gunmen appeared to be organized and knew who they wanted to target, a local construction worker who witnessed the attack told the AP. He said the Nigerian household staff members at the residence were left unharmed, while the foreigners were quickly abducted. The worker spoke on condition of anonymity as he's not authorized to speak to journalists.

The Ansaru statement hinted that it would kill the hostages and vaguely referenced a previous kidnap. The group earlier claimed the kidnapping in December of a French national working on a renewal energy project in Nigeria's northern Katsina state.

Britain also linked Ansaru to the May 2011 kidnapping of Christopher McManus, who was abducted with Italian Franco Lamolinara from a home in Kebbi state. The men were held for months, before their captors killed in March 2012 them during a failed Nigerian military raid backed up by British special forces in Sokoto, the main city in Nigeria's northwest.

Authorities initially blamed Boko Haram for the kidnapping, something that it denied. That apparently represented the birth of the group, whose motivations remain murky, but whose threat is increasingly real for foreigners in northern Nigeria.

In November, Britain's interior ministry announced that a parliamentary order that makes membership in or support of Ansaru a criminal offense.

NEWS: WSJ claims Sony will use Gaikai to stream PS3 games in PS4

The Wall Street Journal claims that Sony will use Gaikai, the company the publisher bought back July 2012 for $380M, to stream PlayStation 3 games on the PlayStation 4.

Part of the reason would be that the new PlayStation 4 allegedly uses AMD x86 chips, so direct backwards compatibility would not work, forcing Sony to use software backwards compatibility that Microsoft used with the Xbox 360.

The WSJ also stressed that the live streaming would only apply to PS3 titles and not new PS4 titles.

Several questions arise, however. Would gamers be forced to repurchase PS3 titles, much as they had to repurchase PlayStation 2 games after the Emotion chip was removed from post-launch PS3's?

Then there's the structure and philosophy of Sony itself as an electronics company. After the acquisition of Gaikai, an analyst warned:

"Sony buys it, because cloud gaming is an existential threat to a core part of their business. They then try and integrate it, but they integrate it Sony style - they integrate it and all of a sudden they have to work with the Sony Online Networks, and it has to be integrated into Bravia, and it will only work on certain televisions and not others, and it will have to carry PlayStation branding and you won't be able to use it if you're not building a PlayStation game."

Stay tuned.

Guest Post: Currency Wars Are Trade Wars | Zero Hedge

Submitted by John Aziz of Azizonomics blog,

Paul Krugman is all for currency wars, but not trade wars:

First of all, what people think they know about past currency wars isn?t actually true. Everyone uses some combination phrase like ?protectionism and competitive devaluation? to describe the supposed vicious circle of the 1930s, but as?Barry Eichengreen?has pointed out many times, these really don?t go together. If country A and country B engage in a tit-for-tat of tariffs, the end result is restricted trade; if they each try to push their currency down, the end result is at worst to leave everyone back where they started.

?

And in reality the stuff that?s now being called ?currency wars? is almost surely a net plus for the world economy. In the 1930s this was because countries threw off their golden fetters ? they left the gold standard and this freed them to pursue expansionary monetary policies. Today that?s not the issue; but what Japan, the US, and the UK are doing is in fact trying to pursue expansionary monetary policy, with currency depreciation as a byproduct.

There is a serious intellectual error here, typical of much of the recent discussion of this issue. A currency war is?by definition?a low-level form of a trade war because currencies are internationally traded commodities. The intent (and there is much circumstantial evidence to suggest that Japan at least is acting with mercantilist intent, but that is another story for another day) is not relevant ? currency depreciation is currency depreciation and still has the same effects on creditors and trade partners, whatever the claimed intent.

Krugman cites Barry Eichengreen as evidence that competitive devaluation does not necessarily mean a trade war, but Eichengreen?does not address the issue of a trade war directly, much less denying the possibility of one. ?Indeed, while broadly supportive of competitive devaluation?Eichengreen notes that the process was ?disorderly and disruptive?.

And the risks of disorder and disruption are still very real today.

As Mark Thoma noted in 2010:

While the?positive effects?a currency war produced in the 1930s are unlikely to reappear,?there is a chance of large negative effects such as a simultaneous trade war or the?breakdown?of the international monetary system, so let?s hope a currency war can be avoided.

The mechanism here is very simple. Some countries ? those with a lower domestic rate of inflation, like Japan ? have a natural advantage in a currency war against countries with a higher domestic rate of inflation like Brazil and China. If one side runs out of leverage to debase their currency because of heightened domestic inflation, their next recourse is to resort to direction trade measures like quotas and tariffs.

And actually, the United States and China in particular have been engaging in a low-level trade and currency war for a long time.

As I noted last year:

China?and?Russia?and?Brazil?have all recently expressed deep unease at America?s can-kicking and money-printing mentality. This is partly because American money printing has exported inflation to the world, as a result of the dollar?s role as the global reserve currency, and partly because these states already own a lot of American debt, and do not want to be paid off in hugely-debased money.

Since I made that statement, there has been a great lot of debasement without any great spiral of damaging trade measures. But with the world locked into ever greater monetary and trade interdependency, and with fiery trade rhetoric continuing to spew forth from the BRIC nations, who by-and-large seem to continue to believe that American money-printing is damaging their interests?? ? who in the past two years have put together a new global reserve currency framework ? it would be deeply complacent to believe that the risks of a severe trade war have gone away.

(Unfortunately,?Krugman and Eichengreen both seem to discount the reality that?Okun?s law has broken down, and that?monetary expansion today is?supporting crony industries, and?exacerbating income inequality, but those are another story for another day)

Chrysler recalls 4,278 Viper sports cars on airbag issue

DETROIT | Fri Feb 15, 2013 1:26pm GMT

DETROIT (Reuters) - Chrysler Group LLC said on Friday it is recalling 4,278 Dodge Viper sports cars globally to fix a part that could cause the airbags to inadvertently deploy, expanding a recall from last fall.

The U.S. automaker, controlled by Fiat SpA (FIA.MI), is recalling 3,660 of the Vipers in the United States from model years 2003 and 2004 to address a potential for the front airbags or seat belt pretensioners to mistakenly deploy. Also affected are 440 cars in Canada, 10 in Mexico and 168 in the rest of the world.

Chrysler said it is unaware of any inadvertent deployments in the Vipers. An interim notification is expected to be sent this month with a remedy available later in the year, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Affected vehicles will be fitted, at no charge, with a harness filter that restores a control module's capacity to manage the airbag and pretensioner deployment.

Last November, Chrysler recalled about 923,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs from model years 2002 through 2004 for the same issue.

How would you change Acers Iconia Tab a700

When we handed Acer's Iconia Tab to our tame tablet reviewer, they were bewildered by its 1,920 x 1,200 display. While it may have been easy to use, quick and lovely to look at, it was also a bit on the hefty side, with its meager battery not helping. So then, six months down the line, we're asking you to sound off about what you liked and loathed about this device, because we're fairly sure the Acers of this world are listening.

Starbucks Canada to open more than 150 stores in 2013

Starbucks photo

Starbucks' Blonde roast sales in Canada have exceeded the company's expectations, with twice as many people per capita drinking it than in the U.S.

Katie Scaff, Staff Writer

Starbucks Canada says it will undergo the largest expansion this year in the company?s 26-year history, with plans to open more than 150 stores across the country.

The growth of the Seattle-based Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX) subsidiary comes in part thanks to Target Corp., which will open Starbucks outlets in many of the 124 Canadian locations it plans to open in 2013. Starbucks Canada said the expansion is also a response to the success it has seen since launching its Blonde roast last year.

With more than 1,200 locations, Canada is Starbucks? biggest international market.

The Secrets Of Successful Property Buying Revealed | The White ...

Being a newbie to the realm of real estate a few pointers to keep you from losing money would be a big help. We offer the following tips to guide you on your way to successful real estate buying.

When you are buying a house, you have to be very cautious if you are unsure about your job. This is because any home purchase comes with a final obligation. You must make monthly mortgage payments or risk a devastating financial loss. Make sure that you have enough money saved up in the bank to pay for your mortgage in case anything happens to your job.

It is a good idea to retain an attorney who specializes in real estate when you are involved with foreclosure purchases. Complications can occur with pre- and regular foreclosures, so you need a legal representative to look out for your personal interests. This could help you to save a lot of money over the long run.

Find a good, experienced broker or real estate agent to work with you while you look for potential investment properties. They have access to many resources that aren?t open to the general public. Oftentimes, brokers have access to software that sorts and organizes housing listings based on your needs and preferences. You can certainly utilize the listings on MLS solo; however, it can often prove time consuming and tedious. When you put the task in the hands of those with the software, the process is faster. Sometimes, it even finds bargains and deals you might miss on your own.

Set aside a fund for unexpected expenses linked to the new property. Buyers typically figure out their closing costs by totaling the down payment, any points that they pay to the lender, and all real estate taxes after they are prorated. In many cases, closing costs have extra items like improvement bonds, school taxes, and other things that depend on your area.

This information has outlined the challenges involved in buying properties. Still, if you research properties well and use good sense, you can be successful. Being highly organized will make the process less difficult and less confusing.

For more helpful information about any real estate questions or to read about remodeling a property, please follow this link: Louisville Home Sales Realtors or try http://www.louisvillehomesales.com/neighborhoods/crescent-hill-homes-for-sale/. A lot of people who want to buy a home do not realize that it might have complications. Use this advice to help you when making your next home purchase.

Carney sets high bar to changes at BoE

LONDON (Reuters) - Mark Carney, the next governor of the Bank of England, said on Thursday any rethink of how British monetary policy is run should be made carefully but changes should be looked at over time.

Carney told MPs in London that a commitment to keeping stimulus over a period of time could be needed but played down speculation that he would rapidly press for bigger changes at the bank when he takes over in July.

"In my view, flexible inflation targeting ?- as practiced in both Canada and the UK -? has proven itself to be the most effective monetary policy framework implemented thus far," the Canadian central bank chief said as he delivered his first views on how to revive a near stagnant British economy.

"As a result, the bar for alteration is very high," he said in written answers to questions from a parliamentary committee.

Sterling rose after Carney's testimony as investors took it as showing little signs of looser monetary policy ahead.

The pound rose 0.4 percent to $1.5720 as investors who had bet on hints of more aggressive easing measures.

"Some of Carney's comments suggest that he favours some changes in the BoE's policy framework. Nevertheless, we rule out that changes will be abrupt as he sounds very keen on maintaining confidence in the institution's credibility," said Annalisa Piazza, an economist at Newedge Strategy.

Carney, who will be the first foreigner to run the bank in its 318-year history, took part in a three-hour question-and-answer session with MPs after submitting his testimony.

In it, he said that while moving cautiously, reviewing monetary policies would be important.

"Although the bar for change ... should be very high, it seems to me important that the framework for monetary policy -rightly set by governments and not by central banks - is reviewed and debated periodically," Carney said.

Carney said he would welcome a short debate on this, as the Bank of England's remit has not been seriously reviewed since it gained operational independence in 1997.

Not only does Chancellor George Osborne set the policy framework but Carney will also be only one voice on the central bank's policy committee so there is no guarantee he could force through change even if he wanted to.

"Whatever Mark Carney says about monetary policy today, he will be one member of nine on the MPC, so cannot dictate policy," former Monetary Policy Committee member Andrew Sentance said.

STRONG CREDENTIALS

After taking over at the Bank of Canada in 2008, Carney earned a reputation for protecting his home country from the global financial crisis and he now faces the bigger challenge of getting Britain out of a rut of almost zero growth.

Carney promised to keep Canadian rates near zero for about a year in April 2009 as the global crisis intensified, before the idea was taken up by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

That kind of approach has raised eyebrows at the Bank. Several top officials have said it is not needed for Britain, in part because of concerns it could stoke the country's persistently above-target inflation.

Asked about that kind of communications policy by the MPs, Carney said central banks "may need to commit credibly to maintaining highly accommodative policy even after the economy and, potentially, inflation picks up".

However, markets could begin to doubt that kind of commitment if inflation rose above target, he said.

"To 'tie its hands,' a central bank could publicly announce precise numerical thresholds for inflation and unemployment that must be met before reducing stimulus," Carney said in his written answers. "This could reinforce the central bank's commitment to stimulative policy in the future and thus enhance the impact of its policies in the present."

The U.S. Federal Reserve recently set inflation and unemployment thresholds for changing its near-zero interest rates. Carney sounded open to the idea but said any move to such a system in Britain would depend on how quickly the bank would be expected to correct any overshoot in inflation expectations.

Carney gave no clear signal that he would push for more bond-buying by the Bank, stressing the risks of quantitative easing but also saying the weak state of Britain's economy would merit monetary stimulus for a period of time.

He was cool on the idea of setting a higher inflation target than the Bank of England's two percent.

"In my view, moving opportunistically to a higher inflation target would risk de-anchoring inflation expectations and destroying the hard-won gains that have come from the entrenchment of price stability," Carney said.

But Mallady didn't stop with his purchase of a single $375,000 LFA. His garage houses bookends of the full spectrum which was made available to U.S. buyers-- the first stateside example,?LFA #003,?and his just-purchased LFA #499, which directly precedes the final specimen that's destined for a museum.

Whence the obsession with the Japanese flagship? "It's the greatest car I've ever owned," he told a group assembled at an event organized by Toyota, according to Autoweek's Blake Z. Rong. "It'll be with me for the rest of my life... It's a piece of art."

?

Say what you may about the LFA's ranking in the pantheon on supercars, its birth and development in the midst a pre-recessionary,?sky's-the-limit climate was legendarily frought with turmoil. During those heady days of wanton R&D, the astronomically pricey switch from an aluminum chassis to a carbon fiber monocoque was simply considered part and parcel of those high dollar games, which ultimately speaks to Lexus' fiercely Japanese attempt to engineer their way into ultraluxury relevance.

?

Now that the LFA is officially history, the question remains whether the next halo car we see from Lexus will be as ambitious, or if the bean counters will take the upper hand and defeat the dreamers by forging an ultimately forgettable appliance.

?

Either way, we think Mr. Mallady has already done quite well with his .4 percent stake in the LFA empire.

GaryMoller.com - Health, Fitness - Naturally!: The Flu Shot ? Dr Oz is ...

Gary: ?The following article is by a NZ Doctor (MD) with decades of experience in the health sector. ?He has requested total anonymity. ?On reading this you will understand that this Dr is breaking ranks: Contrary to what we hear in the media and from those in authority: The Seasonal Flu Vaccine Programme is a poor use of precious health dollars. ?I totally agree.

"My main thrust, I guess, is that the Govt should be far more onto it than they are, and should be just as accountable as the drug companies for their actions. A terrible waste of tax payers' money." (Dr)

I have also linked an excellent article on the matter, at the end of this post, that supports what the doctor has written. ?It includes some excellent advice about how to protect yourself, naturally, from the worst effects of seasonal flu. ?

The first video is of Piers Morgan receiving the flu vaccine from Dr Oz. ?The second, at the end of this post, is of him suffering from?the flu 10 days later.

Note: I am not anti-vaccinations (I can't speak for the doctor, because I have not asked him). ?There are some vaccines, such as the tetanus one, that I do not have a problem with. ?I do have a problem with the hijacking of health by commercial interests that consign our immune systems to the back seat when it comes to protection from agents of disease.?

Here is the Good Doctor's article:

The Flu Shot ? Dr Oz is getting his, are you?

The flue is heading our way and if the reports coming out of the USA are anything to go by, we could be thumped.?

?DR Oz tells us we need the flu shot and he will be getting his. None the less, with a widespread vaccination campaign and with our family doctors keeping us on our toes, we will be well prepared. As doctors, the word vaccination has us nodding our heads in appreciation for this wondrous gift, bestowed upon us to save our patients from serious illness and for those in poor health, even death. Our collective wisdom tells us that hard-working scientists, more elevated than we at the coal face, have done the hard yards and we need us only ask, when, where and how often. Besides, we know the Department of Health and Pharmac, ever vigilant with their spending, will know that a stitch in time saves nine.

A few weeks ago, an update to a medical Information program had an interview with an expert in disease control who stated that the vaccine works on average in 62% of those vaccinated, but in 2011, although no figure was given, it was less than 60%. The strike rate seemed a little poor to me and being one who likes to be honest with his patients ie, I am not comfortable telling them they need to have it when less than 60% might benefit, information related to the flu vaccine was worth a closer look.

Further to this, the frequently touted ?the vaccination?doesn't?necessarily mean you won?t get the bug, but it won?t be as bad,? is also worthy of consideration. We all know it is the elderly, the ill and the very young that are most vulnerable to seasonal influenza.

A 2005 study reported in one of the world?s major medical journals, Archives of Internal Medicine stated that the influenza vaccination is not proven in younger individuals at risk (Arch Intern Med, 2005, 165(16):121-2). It was further stated in the same year, that despite an increasing vaccination coverage after 1980, there was no correlation with declining mortality rates in any age group. (Arch Intern Med.2005;165(3):265-72. In fact between 1967 and 2011, there have been no clinical trials evaluating the effects of the traditional flu vaccine in the elderly at all ? the most highly targeted group (Lancet Infect Dis.2012;12(1):36-44) In considering the millions of dollars spent each year in NZ on the vaccination program, things looked a little flakey, which leads us to the Cochrane Collaboration.

The Cochrane Collaboration

The above organization is an international network of 28,000 dedicated people working together to help healthcare workers, policy makers, patients, their advocates and carers, make well informed decisions about health care. Their work is regarded as the benchmark for high quality information about the effectiveness of health care. The reviews they produce are unique because they are produced by and relevant to, everyone interested in the effects of human health care. This is where the rubber meets the road, it either helps us or it?doesn't.

Their findings are mind boggling:-

Their study ?Vaccines for preventing influenza in healthy adults,? (Gary: I have reproduced the entire report at the end of this article) is damming of the entire pharmaceutical industry and its minions: the drug testing industry and the medical system that both relies on and promotes them. Some major findings were:?

??.industry funded studies were published in more prestigious journals and cited more often than other studies??

??.reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin?.?

??.there is evidence of widespread manipulation of conclusions?.?

Even without taking into account the shoddiness of the studies in general, the authors were still hard put to find any benefit of any sort in healthy people. At best, they found a small decrease in the number of days off work. They did not find that the vaccinations had any benefit whatsoever in complications or mortality. From the science point of view, the reviews of Chochrane are as good as it gets - and the pharmaceutical industry, yes the fox has been well and truly in charge of the hen house.

The revenue from the flu vaccine to the pharmaceutical industry is reputed to be 3.6 billion $USD a year. Even in NZ, at a cost of around $20 a dose, millions of dollars are involved. The question that must be asked ? in a country where health dollars are hard to come by, as to why are Pharmac and the NZ Department of Health, are not up with the play? Evidence based research is at the core of sound medical decision making, however, in the case of the pharmaceutical companies; we know that he who pays the piper calls the tune. A recent article (Mercola.com), stated that the cradle to the grave vaccination policy of the US Centre?s for Disease Control has become so entrenched ,that the CDC ? the organization that set the policy, can quietly acknowledge that any benefit is minimal, which was stated in a round- about way in one of their recent bulletins (www.cdc.gov/flu/about/us_flu-related_deaths). We hope that Dr Oz, with his powerful media position, at least gets his jab at no cost.

Does having a flu shot mean I won't get the flu?
