Some 14,368 small businesses were sold in California in 2012, the most in any year since 2008, but sales in San Francisco were down 21 percent from last year.

The uptick in activity is a good sign for the Golden State?s bruised economy, according to Business Exchange Network Inc., which keeps track of such data. BizBen, as the Dublin company is known, watches sales of companies with a price of under two million dollars.

Strong sales in November (1,022 sales) and December (1,322 deals) helped push 2012?s total to the highest point in four years.

In 2008, 21,689 small companies were sold in California.

Sales in 2012 were particularly strong in Orange County and San Diego County, as well as in Sacramento County, which had 481 business transfers, up from 452 in 2011.

But the Bay Area and Silicon Valley lagged, with San Francisco reaching just 497 deals, down from 629 in 2011. And Santa Clara County had 732 deals in 2012, its lowest count in three years.

Peter Siegel, BizBen?s president, said the business sale market is recovering slowly along with the rest of the California economy, but he doesn?t expect it to hit the high levels of 2008 and earlier for several more years.
